Knowledge Nexus is the research investment test. Your hero gear, pets, charms, and hero levels are completely stripped. Only Academy and War Academy combat research determines your stage progress. This guide covers the optimal research priority order and ROI math.
The Knowledge Nexus opens every Friday and Saturday and unlocks immediately at TC 19 — no additional requirements. It's the great equalizer: a 100M power player who skipped research will lose to a 50M power player who maxed combat tech. Your account power is irrelevant here — only your research investment counts.
What Stats Count (and What's Ignored)
| System | Active? | Impact |
|---|---|---|
| Academy Research (Combat) | ✅ Yes | Infantry/Cavalry/Archer military tech trees |
| War Academy Research | ✅ Yes | Advanced combat research (unlocks at server age ~220 days) |
| Academy Research (Economic) | ❌ No | Gathering, building, production research = zero impact |
| Hero Gear | ❌ No | Completely ignored |
| Hero Combat Expedition Skills | ✅ Yes | Activate normally — use heroes with combat skills, not economic ones |
| Pets | ❌ No | Completely ignored |
| Governor Charms | ❌ No | Completely ignored |
Research Tree Priority Order
Not all research contributes equally to Knowledge Nexus performance. Here's the exact priority order for maximum stage progression:
Academy Research Priority
| # | Research | Stat Provided | Why This Order |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Infantry Health | Significant HP bonus | 50% of your army is infantry — HP keeps them alive |
| 2 | Infantry Defense | Significant DEF bonus | Multiplicative with HP — extends fight duration dramatically |
| 3 | Archer Attack | Significant ATK bonus | 30% of army is archers = primary DPS source |
| 4 | Archer Lethality | Lethality bonus | Penetrates enemy defense for more effective damage |
| 5 | Cavalry Attack | ATK bonus | 20% cavalry contributes secondary DPS |
| 6 | Infantry Attack | ATK bonus | Adds chip damage from frontline during attrition |
| 7 | Troop Capacity | +Capacity bonus | More troops = all other stats apply to more units |
Exact percentage gains per research level are visible in your in-game Academy tech tree before you start each upgrade.
Skip Economic Research entirely for Knowledge Nexus purposes. Gathering speed, building speed, and resource production technologies have zero impact on combat stages. Every day spent researching economic tech is a day your Knowledge Nexus progression stalls.
War Academy Research Priority
| # | Research | Stat Boost | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Advanced Troop Health (all) | Significant HP bonus (all types) | Applies to all troop types — highest overall value |
| 2 | Advanced Archer Attack | Significant ATK bonus | Stacks with Academy archer research additively |
| 3 | Advanced Infantry Defense | Significant DEF bonus | Further extends infantry wall survivability |
| 4 | Lethality Enhancements | Lethality bonus | Important for pushing past Stage 30+ |
Check your in-game War Academy for exact stat gains per tech level before each upgrade.
Research-to-Stage Conversion
How much do research upgrades actually move the needle? Here's the approximate relationship between research investment and stage clears:
| Research Status | Approx. Stage | Player Profile |
|---|---|---|
| TC 19, basic combat tech | 1-8 | Fresh unlock |
| TC 20-21, Infantry + Archer maxed | 8-15 | Focused researcher |
| Server age ~220 days, War Academy started | 15-25 | Committed player |
| War Academy mid-level | 25-35 | Endgame researcher |
| Near-maxed combat tech | 35-50+ | Maxed player |
Approximate — your actual stage depends on formation optimization and RNG.
Optimal Formation: 50-20-30
┌─────────────────────────────────────┐
│ KNOWLEDGE NEXUS │
│ Recommended Formation │
├─────────────────────────────────────┤
│ │
│ ┌───────────────────────────┐ │
│ │ INFANTRY (50%) │ │

Alternative: 60/15/25 if your infantry research is significantly ahead of your archer research. Match the troop ratio to where your research investment is strongest.
Hero Selection
Knowledge Nexus runs on expedition battle rules, which means hero gear and levels are ignored, but combat expedition skills do activate. This matters: a Mythic hero with strong combat expedition skills (Attack Up, Lethality Up, etc.) will outperform a bare R-rank hero. Do not use heroes whose skills are purely economic or gathering-focused — those skills will not trigger and make those heroes dead weight in this mode.
Assign one Infantry, one Cavalry, and one Archer hero as required by formation. Prioritize heroes that have combat-oriented expedition skills leveled up, even if their overall rank is lower.
Long-Term Investment Strategy
Knowledge Nexus rewards compound over time. Unlike Coliseum (gear can be swapped) or Forest of Life (pet investment), research is permanent and transfers value everywhere:
- Prepare for the War Academy at server day ~220 — this is the biggest Knowledge Nexus unlock after TC 19. It requires both your server to be approximately 220 days old and your Town Center to be at least level 30. You cannot rush this with TC levels alone; it is gated by server age.
- Prioritize combat research DAILY — always have a combat tech researching
- Max Infantry and Archer trees first for immediate stage pushes
- Participate every Friday-Saturday — Misty Crystal income matters over months
- Use Friday to scout your max stage, Saturday to optimize formation and push further
Rewards and Raid
Clear Stage 10 to unlock the Raid function. Once unlocked, you can instantly claim rewards for all previously cleared stages when Knowledge Nexus reopens — no re-battling needed. Misty Crystals from Raid are used in the Trial Shop for Mithril, hero shards, and development items.
Stage Progression Tips
- Use all 5 daily attempts — RNG variance can swing 2-3 stages in either direction
- Save formation presets for quick deployment between attempts
- Check battle reports to identify which troop type dies first — invest research there
- If infantry melts instantly, switch to 60/15/25 for more survivability
- Knowledge Nexus performance improves permanently as you research — patience pays off
