The Truth: F2P players can absolutely compete in Kingshot—but only with disciplined resource management and strategic patience. This guide covers everything you need to dominate without opening your wallet.
Kingshot is designed to encourage spending, but smart F2P players regularly reach the top ranks of their servers. The key is understanding what matters, avoiding traps, and playing efficiently.
The 5 Golden Rules of F2P Success
- Save ALL gems for Hero Roulette — No exceptions
- Focus on 3 heroes maximum — Stars beat rarity
- Protect your resources — Backpack storage is sacred
- Never let builders idle — Every second counts
- Alliance membership is mandatory — Join at TC6
These rules aren't suggestions—they're the foundation of every successful F2P player's strategy.
The Hero Roulette Math
Critical Knowledge: Reaching 4 stars on a single Hero Roulette hero typically takes 2–3 full event cycles for a F2P player — roughly 324,000–490,000 gems depending on RNG (1,500 gems per spin, 13,500 per 10-spin). That math alone is why Hero Roulette is the only thing worth your gems. See our gem spending guide for the full breakdown.
Why Hero Roulette Matters
Hero Roulette events offer the only reliable F2P path to top-tier heroes. Unlike random pulls that waste gems on fragments you can't use, Roulette provides:
- Guaranteed hero shards for specific meta heroes
- Predictable investment path to competitive units
- Best gems-to-power conversion in the game
Your Gem-Spend Roadmap
Saving gems doesn't mean letting them rot in a pile — it means spending them on the right targets in the right order. Here's the sequence I follow:
- Saul first. About 35 spins (~45–50k gems) takes him to 2 stars, which unlocks a permanent 6% construction speed bonus and resource cost reduction. That economy boost pays for itself many times over — it's the one early target worth clearing before you start hoarding.
- Then bank everything for Gen 2. When Zoe arrives she's a massive power spike. Plan for 120 spins per Zoe roulette, and split them across days 2 and 3 of HoG so you max rewards on both days instead of dumping it all at once. A few roulettes will push her to 4+ stars, and a 4-star Zoe lets a F2P account rival players spending real money.
- Pair her with Marlin. If you're open to a single small spend, he unlocks for about $5 through Hall of Heroes — then pour every saved Mythic Shard into him. Zoe and Marlin together are monsters in Conquest, Arena, and Expedition.
- Spin for Petra too. After Saul, hero spins are simply the best use of your gems, and she's worth the investment.
What NOT to Spend Gems On
| Trap | Why It's Bad |
|---|---|
| VIP XP purchases | VIP gains naturally over time |
| Basic hero pulls | Random fragments you can't upgrade |
| Shop refreshes | Rarely worth the cost |
| Speedup purchases | Events provide better value |
| Resource purchases | Gatherable for free |
Smart Resource Management
The Backpack Strategy
Your resources exist in two forms:
- Item Bag/Backpack — Protected from raids
- Main Inventory — Vulnerable to attack
Always keep resources in your backpack. Only transfer to inventory immediately before spending on upgrades. This prevents losing hours of progress to raiders.
Use the in-game Bank. It's effectively free gems for deposits you'd be sitting on anyway — set it and let it pay out. There's no reason to leave that yield on the table as a F2P player.
Resource Building Priority
Priority 1 (Always):
- Town Center — Gates all progression (see building priority guide)
Priority 2 (Keep within 2 levels of TC):
- Mill (Food/Bread)
- Sawmill (Wood)
- Quarry (Stone)
Priority 3 (After basics):
- Barracks and military buildings
- Academy for research
- Hospital for troop recovery
Wilderness Gathering
After your first few weeks, wilderness gathering becomes your primary resource source:
- Always send marches to gather
- Prioritize higher-level nodes (better efficiency)
- Use gathering heroes for bonus resources
- Coordinate with alliance for protected gathering zones
Hero Investment Strategy
The 3-Hero Core
Critical Rule: Spreading upgrades across many heroes kills F2P progression. Check the hero tier list for current rankings. Focus on exactly 3 heroes for your core lineup.
F2P Recommended Core
Tank (Infantry):
- Zoe — Best F2P infantry, 40% HP heal
- Alternative: Howard (early game only)
DPS (Cavalry):
- Jabel — Best Mythic for F2P, login rewards
- Petra — Hero Roulette target (Gen 3+)
Support (Archer):
- Quinn — Accessible early-game archer
- Upgrade to: Marlin when available
For Conquest and Arena: lean on Diana and Chenko. You'll be swimming in their shards as a F2P player, and both punch well above their cost in those modes. Skip Helga and Amadeus — they're built for mid-to-heavy spenders and will only drain materials you can't spare.
Stars Over Rarity
| Star Level | Power Multiplier | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| 5 Stars | Maximum potential | Endgame goal |
| 4 Stars | Major power spike | Hero Roulette target |
| 3 Stars | Competitive baseline | First milestone |
| 2 Stars | Beats 1-star SSR | Minimum viable |
| 1 Star | Collection only | Don't use in combat |
Town Center Priority System
The Town Center gates every other system in Kingshot. Its level determines:
- Which buildings you can construct
- Maximum level for all other buildings
- Research availability
- Hero Hall capacity
- Troop tier access
The Focus Principle: When deciding what to upgrade, the answer is almost always "Town Center." Only upgrade prerequisites when required for TC advancement.
TC Progression Timeline
| TC Level | Unlocks | Timeline |
|---|---|---|
| TC 4 | Hero Hall | Day 1 |
| TC 6 | Embassy (Alliances) | Day 1-2 |
| TC 7 | Higher troop levels (upgrade each troop camp) | Week 1-2 |
| TC 9 | Academy (Research) | Day 3-4 |
| TC 25 | Governor Charms | Week 6-8 |
| TC 30 | Endgame content | 40+ days |
Keep something building until TC30. Until you hit TC30, either your Town Center or your Embassy should be upgrading at all times — never let your construction queue sit empty. A few milestones matter more than the rest:
- TC19 — unlocks Island and Fountain progression. Prioritize getting here; it's an early goal worth pushing for.
- TC23, TC26, TC30 — power spikes, each opening a higher troop tier.
Start a farm account as soon as you can. TC28–30 is brutally resource-hungry — having a billion or two stockpiled smooths out that wall, and your farm's resources feed into KvK on top of it.
Alliance Strategies for F2P
Why Alliances Are Non-Negotiable
F2P players cannot compete without alliance membership. Benefits include:
- Free building speedups via help system
- Resource protection in alliance territory
- Rally participation for event rewards
- Tech bonuses from alliance research
- Collective protection from attackers
Maximizing Alliance Benefits
- Help every building request (clasped hands icon)
- Donate to alliance tech daily
- Participate in all rallies for rewards
- Communicate actively in chat
- Build in alliance territory for protection
Choosing the Right Alliance
Target alliances ranked 10-20 on your server. Top 5 alliances often have demanding requirements, while lower-ranked ones provide fewer benefits.
Look for:
- Active help system (offers appear frequently)
- Organized territory with clear zones
- Active leadership (R4/R5 online regularly)
- Structured event participation
- 1–2 strong whales who actually show up for Bear rallies — being surrounded by spenders means more rallies to join and more rewards to share in
Avoid:
- Constant internal drama
- Wars with multiple alliances
- Inactive membership
- No clear territorial strategy
Event Optimization
Events provide the best resource-to-time conversion in Kingshot. F2P players should:
High-Priority Events
- Hero Roulette — Gem spending (ONLY gem spend)
- Construction Events — Save speedups for these
- Training Events — Bulk train during bonuses
- Alliance Events — Always participate
- Suppress/Conquest — Daily clears for rewards
Event & Material Discipline
This is where most F2P players quietly sabotage themselves. Your rare materials are event currency — treat them that way.
Don't chase the leaderboard. As a F2P or low spender you cannot out-spend whales for a top placement, and trying burns your entire stockpile — which then cripples you for the next event. Take the top tier reward every time and stop there. Maxing rewards consistently beats one vanity rank you can't sustain.
Save Everything for Points
Charms, visions, Forgehammers, speedups, rare resources — bank them all to score event points, not to spend casually. A few rules that keep your stockpile working for you:
- Keep at least 80 Epic (gold) keys on hand for seasonal events. Two of the seven days let you spend Epic keys for points — you'll only need 20–30 keys to max those two days.
- Hero gear leveling only scores points in two early events: Steel Edge and HoG Week 2. After those have passed, level your hero gear freely — there's no reason to hold it back anymore.
- Don't dump materials into Alliance Mobilization. The only AM missions worth taking are Terrors, Troop Power, Beasts, and Resources.
Double-Dip Whenever You Can
The exception to the Alliance Mobilization rule is when you're already spending rare resources for another event. If you're cashing in 100 Mythic Shards for Strongest Governor, also take the matching Alliance Mobilization mission (e.g. 68 Mythic Shards) at the same time — you get paid twice for one expenditure. Seasonal events are full of these double- and triple-dip windows; learn to spot them and you'll squeeze far more out of the same materials.
Bear Trap: Your Resource Lifeline
Never skip Bear Trap. The resource and Forgehammer infusion is exactly what keeps your TC progression moving — especially through the TC28–30 wall. Hammers are always valuable, so grab them every chance you get.
Bear rallies are also one of the few places a F2P player can contribute real value to a whale-heavy alliance. The trick is the joiner setup:
- Put Chenko, Yeonwoo, or Amane in the left hero slot when you join, and keep their top-right Lethality / Attack skill maxed. That single buff is how a smaller account adds meaningful rally damage.
- Save your formations so you can join instantly, and pile into the whales' rallies as often as possible.
See the Bear Hunt joiner slot setup for the exact slot order.
Shop Buying Priorities
Each shop has a short list of things actually worth your currency. Buy these; ignore the rest.
| Shop | What to Grab |
|---|---|
| Alliance Shop | Advanced Teleporters at ~70% off, Quinn shards, Recalls; all speedups at 40–70% off; every VIP item regardless of discount |
| Merchant Shop | Exchange resources every day |
| Mystery Shop | Free daily refresh for freebies; bank for the 50%-off Gen 2 widgets when they unlock |
| VIP Shop | Advanced Teleporters, Gear XP manuals; a solid early source of bread and wood |
| Arena Shop | Mythic Gear only — medallions too if you're loaded |
| Swordland | Artisan Visions |
| Alliance Championship | Silks, threads, medallions |
| Trial Shop | Mithril, Mythic Shards |
If you ever do open your wallet, the two best purchases in the game are the Extra Construction Queue and the March packs. Everything else is optional; those two compound for months.
F2P Progression Timeline

Common F2P Mistakes
Avoid These Traps:
- Spending gems on anything but Hero Roulette — This single mistake destroys F2P progression
- Upgrading too many heroes — Focus on 3, ignore the rest
- Leaving resources in inventory — Use backpack storage
- Skipping alliance participation — Free speedups matter
- Random building upgrades — TC always comes first
- Ignoring events — Best rewards require participation
Conclusion
F2P success in Kingshot is absolutely achievable—but it requires discipline, patience, and strategic focus. Master the Hero Roulette math, invest in exactly 3 core heroes, and leverage your alliance for maximum efficiency.
- Gems → Hero Roulette only
- Heroes → Focus on 3 maximum
- Resources → Backpack protection
- Building → Town Center priority
- Alliance → Join and participate daily
- Events → Never miss participation
Remember: Consistency beats intensity. Daily optimization over months creates F2P players who dominate spenders who don't play strategically. Stay focused, stay patient, and you'll reach the top.
